Overview
The Petey Greene Program launched in Pittsburgh in winter 2020. We recruit, train and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers—as well as community member volunteers—to serve as academic tutors for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the Pittsburgh area. We recruit volunteers primarily from:
Carnegie Melon University
Duquesne University
University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Community (volunteers not affiliated with the above universities or who are not university students)
We primarily support students enrolled in high school equivalency programs, and focus on the following subjects: math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply!
Volunteers are part of a cohort who meet together on a monthly basis to reflect on their experiences in the jail and make meaning together. This cohort will also participate in the PGP Leadership Institute, a two-day retreat in which volunteers will meet with community leaders, activists, and cultural workers whose work addresses the crisis of mass incarceration. Volunteers will have ongoing opportunities to meet with community leaders throughout the semester, and to become involved in the broader movement for criminal justice and reentry reform.
Current partner institutions and programs include:
Allegheny County Jail
Butler County Jail
Community Intensive Supervision Project
State Correctional Institution at Greene
